Suit Alleges Hospital Discouraged Treatment Of Those With Disabilities
A lawsuit filed against a Wisconsin hospital alleges that doctors wrongfully advocated limiting treatment for patients with developmental disabilities due to concerns about quality of life.
The suit argues that parents and guardians do not have the right to instruct a doctor to withhold medical treatment unless the individual they care for is in a “persistent vegetative state.”
In two separate cases, however, the suit says that individuals with developmental disabilities came to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, Wis. with signs of pneumonia and were discouraged from continuing treatment due to quality of life concerns.
