A new drama opening on Broadway stars an Academy Award nominee as the mother of a child with disabilities.

The play “Mary Jane” is about the single mother of a boy named Alex who was born prematurely and has cerebral palsy, among other disabilities, and the women who support her.

Actress Rachel McAdams is making her Broadway debut in the title role.

The show delves into the realities of caring for a child who is chronically ill and must be hospitalized.

“It’s the story of a single mother in an impossible family situation,” according to the Manhattan Theatre Club, which is staging the production. “Faced with seemingly insurmountable odds, Mary Jane relies on unflagging optimism and humor, along with the wisdom of the women around her who have become a makeshift family, to take on each new day.”

The play written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog first premiered at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 2017.

“Mary Jane” is now showing at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in New York through June 2.
