As the holiday season kicks off, kids with autism and other disabilities will have a chance to visit with Santa Claus without all of the usual chaos during a series of special events across the country.

So-called Santa Cares events will be held at numerous malls and other locations early next month.

Santa and other staff will be trained to accommodate individuals with disabilities and their families. In addition, the lighting and music will be adjusted and there will be minimal wait times.

To limit crowds, Santa Cares will be held when the surrounding shopping venues are closed, according to Cherry Hill Programs, which puts on the events in partnership with Autism Speaks.

“We need more organizations like Cherry Hill Programs to actively create opportunities for people of different abilities, and especially people with autism,” said Jennifer Schell Podoll, senior vice president of constituent engagement at Autism Speaks. “Inclusive environments foster a sense of belonging and acceptance within communities, serving as a foundation for personal growth, mutual respect and societal progress.”

The sessions are free and open to people of all ages, but they do require reservations. There is a fee to purchase any photo package.

Most Santa Cares events will take place Dec. 8.
