A new theme park is prioritizing the needs of children with disabilities as it opens its doors for the first time.

The Peppa Pig Theme Park near Dallas opened over the weekend complete with a host of accessibility features.

All staff at the park — which is based on the British children’s show about a pig, her family and her diverse group of friends — have received autism awareness and sensitivity training, park officials said.

In addition, the park includes Peppa Pig’s Balloon Ride, which allows wheelchair users to roll right into a basket that soars into the sky. There is a splash pad that’s graded for wheelchair use, paths in the park are designed to be accessible and other rides and attractions offer transfer options.

The new park is opening as a Certified Autism Center, a designation bestowed by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards. In addition to training staff, the organization helped create sensory guides detailing how each park attraction may affect those with sensory processing issues. Quiet spaces are available for individuals who need a sensory break, officials said.

Visitors with disabilities can also obtain a HERO Pass, allowing them and up to six people in their group immediate boarding one time at each attraction. A return time can be requested if individuals with a pass want to ride a second time.

The $40 million park is the third launched by Merlin Entertainments under the Peppa Pig name. The other two are in Florida and Germany.
